How to say no, How to stay focused, How to love somewhere you hate living – Yes Yes Questions #1 REVIEW!

GUESS WHAT???!?!??!?!?!

You know that thing I did? Where I had a secret wish that seemed silly, had little to do with my job and is only for already super-famous people (or paid journalists)… but I thought I’d try it out anyway?

IT WORKED!!

If you missed the whole story, the Cliff notes are:

– I’d always wanted to be an advice columnist (what we Brits call an “Agony Aunt”)
– I decided I’d just do a live Advice Column call and see what happened

So was born… YES YES QUESTIONS!

And YYQ #1 was a ROARING SUCCESS! So, in case you missed it, you can listen to the recording, or I’ve listed the questions asked, and written a short form version of the answer I gave.

And before I give you both – I’m doing it again soon!

The questions:
1. How do you tell a story that involves other people, respect their privacy AND honour your own truth and integrity?
2. How do you say no to people without making them feel bad?
3. I have a passion project AND a job and a kid I’m single parenting. How do I stay focused and get things done – especially when I keep getting distracted by exciting new ideas like squirrels?
4. I want to be a better listener, but I LOVE talking! Ideas?
5. How do you sell two things at the same time to one crowd?
6. Advice for going to networking events where everyone already seems to know each other and have a clique?
7. I moved from lovely, sunny, happy Australia back to miserable, rainy, grouchy London and I hate it. Also, I don’t have a new job yet and don’t know what to do. How do I deal?
8. I’m an extrovert living an introvert’s lifestyle. What should I do?

The recording:

The questions people asked and short form answers:

1. How do you tell a story that involves other people, respect their privacy AND honour your own truth and integrity?

Short Form Of Answer: You have to edit EVERY story. Stick to the emotional truth and you can change some narrative details

**PERSONAL FAVOURITE Q TO ANSWER!!!**
2. How do you say no to people without making them feel bad?

SFOA: No one wants you to do things or buy things because you pity them. Just say no, don’t make excuses, and pretend to be confident as you do (even if inside you’re quaking)(BONUS: I read out my email template for how to say no to hangouts or events people ask you to)

3. I have a passion project AND a job and a kid I’m single parenting. How do I stay focused and get things done – especially when I keep getting distracted by exciting new ideas like squirrels?

SFOA: Honour the squirrels by writing them down. Then figure out how to make one of them happen in the smallest way possible, and what the first step to that would be(BONUS: I tell you how this whole thing – Yes Yes Questions – happened by me doing just that)

4. I want to be a better listener, but I LOVE talking! Ideas?

SFOA: Sit with the discomfort of keeping quiet, even when you have the PERFECT thing to share. Practise on low-stakes people

5. How do you sell two things at the same time to one crowd?

SFOA: You can do this, but it takes longer and makes your life much more difficult, so pick the most important one and focus more on that

6. Advice for going to networking events where everyone already seems to know each other and have a clique?

SFOA: Research people, and follow this guide for whom to approach: yesyesmarsha.com/approach

7. I moved from lovely, sunny, happy Australia back to miserable, rainy, grouchy London and I hate it. Also, I don’t have a new job yet and don’t know what to do. How do I deal?

SFOA: See where you bring a little Aussie magic into your day to day life in London. And, if you don’t have a job, start doing something (a transition job or volunteering), it’ll make the world of difference to your psyche.)

8. I’m an extrovert living an introvert’s lifestyle. What should I do?

SFOA: Join Meetup groups so that you feel like you have options. Be open to having people in your life you do things with who aren’t necessarily people you’d instantly assume you’d be friends with.

Honestly, we could have gone on another hour if we’d had time! So…

I’M DOING IT AGAIN!
