Hello!

So, you need to trust me that, what I’m about to show you, is a NINJA-LEVEL storytelling skill. I’ll explain the background, then I’ll give you an exercise that’ll transform the way you tell stories.

I’ve talked before about how the difference between a good story and a great story (or even a bad story and a great story!) is whether or not you tell us how you FEEL.

EMOTIONS are the heart of storytelling. As I’ve already written about why they’re so important (and the brain science that backs this up, here, I’m going to tell you the best way to include them in your stories.

There are three ways we can describe how we felt in a story:

(1) Internal Monologue

This is the easiest to do – and is sometimes important to drive the story along. But don’t rely solely on it. (example: “I didn’t even want to be there! I should have left hours ago!”)

 

(2) Name the emotion

Were you happy? Sad? Angry? Excited? Scared?

For many of us (*raises hand*), we were brought up NOT TO TALK ABOUT OUR FEELINGS and so this can be hard for us. I’d suggest that, over the next week, you start getting curious about which emotions you’re feeling, when. Especially when they’re only mild (“hmm, I’m a bit melancholy today. Yesterday, I was a little delighted”)

 

But here’s the HERO-Level storytelling skill:

 

(3) Physically describe what was happening in your body at that moment.

We always feel our emotions somewhere in our bodies. Describing them within a story is powerful because, when you describe your physical sensations, your listeners’ or readers’ mirror neurons will make them feel the same way.

To help you figure this out, I’ve recorded a little visualisation for you, to walk you through the process.
So, sit up straight, feet flat on the floor. In a second, put your hands comfortably in your lap and close your eyes – but first, press play.

If you have a pen handy, write a couple of notes about what you felt.

And again, as you move through your day, after you’ve checked in with your emotion, ask yourself –

Where in my body do I feel that emotion?
