Everywhere I go (except wds), I feel like I can’t relate to anyone. Many people like to fantasize about what bars/clubs they are planning to go to. And I hate going to those types of places. Women I meet like to gush about clothing and makeup. I am not super girly. Even when I go on hiking/camping trips, somehow I find myself surrounded by people who are mostly interested in dressing up to go to the bar. How do I focus on my target audience while weeding out those who I don’t share common interests?

      Hi Dana!

      Two things:

      (1) My instinct is that this is less about what you say and more about where you go, and finding your people in advance. When you don’t like mainstream stuff (clubs, bars; clothes and makeup), you have to work a little harder at this. But as WDS proves – we do exist!!

It may be that even hiking is too general. Can you find meet-up groups for more specific things you’re interested in? Or even better, can you START one? It might be “Hiking For People Who Like To Talk About Self-Development” or a book club where you choose the books. Or a storytelling show! (Remember, my first show had an audience of 3 people, one of whom was my mum)

      (2) I would challenge you to probe a little further with the club/bar dress/make-up gang. See if you can – after some requisite small-talk so they know you have good judgement – ask questions that elicit less surface responses. I’m a big fan of this question: yesyesmarsha.com/hatesmalltalk/

      Good luck!
